    Protect The Katkari!

Help us protect India's Most Sacred Forest Tribe.

The Katkari are among the most oppressed of India’s indigenous minorities (“Adivasis”) and they are on the brink of extinction.

A disenfranchised Adavasi or tribal group, legislated more than a hundred years ago by the British as a "criminal tribe", they are largely landless and are enslaved in brickworks as bonded labour.

Despite this, The Katkari spirit is strong.

    So, What's Going On?

Since 1988, The Rainforest Information Centre (RIC) has been supporting the work of Rajeev Khedkar and has made every effort to help protect the Katkari Tribe!

RIC made a 20-minute film about the Katkari plight and raised considerable funds for the campaign.

The key to lifting them out of bondage was clearly to establish legal rights to their traditional lands and, recently, RIC has been successful in securing rights to land for more than 600 Katkari villages.

In December 2015, Rajeev wrote us that the campaign to establish land-rights for the Katkari and other Adivasis was finally bearing fruit and “will help resolve the insecure village land issue in at least 600 – 700 Katkari villages”. This is a huge success!

But there is still a LOT of work to be done!

    Help Is On The Way!

The next steps are tree plantings to improve the fertility and productivity of their land.

However, suitable native tree seedlings are not available and they are  establishing a nursery “to ensure multiplication of diverse native plant species (fruits, uncultivated foods, vegetables, medicinal plants, fibre plants, sacred plants, flowering plants, natural dyes, etc)”

RIC has set the ball rolling with a grant of $4,000 which we have sent them  and work has begun!

We hope that some of you who are reading this will help us raise the remainding $8,000 which is so desperately needed!
